Tips for your New Years Resolutions

The first day of the year is always exciting. You’ve reflected on 2023 and decided you’re going to CRUSH the goals you set for 2024.

We all know what happens next, though…

We lose motivation, discipline, focus, and drive. It happens to all of us because the neurobiology of our brain is set up to keep us ALIVE, not fulfilled. So we naturally go to what is comfortable and familiar.

As someone who helps people with development goals every day both in a professional and personal capacity, let me offer you a couple of tips to help make sure you don’t lose momentum!

1. Decide why. Why did you make this goal? NOT the superficial level reason–the real reason. For example, if one of your goals is to make more money, your superficial why could be “because I want to travel more”. The real reason could be that “my cup feels the most full when I get to explore and learn from new experiences”. Dig into the most basic needs of human nature for this – think Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

2. Make it visible. Put your goal and your why someplace you can see it. Out of sight out of mind is real. Make it a phone/computer background, post it on your mirror, put it on a piece of paper that sits on your desk – whatever helps keep it top of mind.

3. Track it. Did you do the steps it takes to get to your goal? It’s a simple yes or no question. Some days you won’t feel like it but if you track it you can reflect back and objectively understand why you are or aren’t meeting your goals.
